Correction of a nomenclatural error in the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera (Cryptophagidae: Atomariinae)

The shaggy inkcap beetle is named on p. 528 of Volume 4 of the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera (L?bl & Smetana, 2007) as "Atomaria (s. str.) fimetarius Fabricius, 1792a: 316 (Dermestes)". In the list of errata to Volume 4 published in Volume 5 of the Catalogue (L?bl & Smetana, 2008) this name is changed on p. 27 from fimetarius to fimetaria, without explanation but presumably for gender agreement. Adoption of one or other of these names is now commonplace in the European (although not the British) entomological literature, for example Otero (2011) and the online EU-Nomen pan-European species dictionary (www.eu- nomen.eu). However, either citation is incorrect. Examination of Fabricius's original description shows that it is on p. 231, not 316, and is unambiguously Dermestes fimetarii (Fig. 1). Fabricius helpfully says "Habitat in Agarico fimetario", and as Agaricus fimetarius Bolton is a junior synonym of Coprinus comatus (O.F. Müller) Pers., the modern name for the shaggy inkcap fungus, it leaves no doubt that our interpretation of Fabricius's species is correct. The Catalogue reference to this species should therefore be altered to: fimetarii Fabricius, 1792a: 231 (Dermestes).
