The Discovery and Removal of a Fluid-Filled Condom Causing Small Bowel Obstruction with Exploratory Laparotomy

In past medical literature, the ingestion of condoms has been notably associated with body packing.1 This refers to smuggling cocaine or other drugs in condoms, ingested orally or inserted rectally, and retrieving them at a later time across international borders.1 Few cases report the findings of a fluid-filled condom in the gastrointestinal tract unassociated with drug smuggling. We present the case of a man with generalized abdominal pain due to a small bowel obstruction of unknown cause. After several studies, a fluid-filled condom was consequently discovered and removed from the distal jejunum during exploratory laparotomy. An 18-year-old man presented to the emergency room with generalized, colicky abdominal pain rated 7 out of 10 without radiation. The patient also experienced nausea and vomiting with food content. He denied passing gas, diarrhea, or abdominal distension. He did not have any past abdominal surgeries or evidence of present hernias. Physical examination of the abdomen revealed mild diffuse tenderness on palpation. It was soft with no distention or rebound tenderness, and bowel sounds were present. Otherwise, the rest of the physical examination was unremarkable. The patient did not volunteer information about swallowing any foreign bodies throughout hospitalization or the following studies.
