IF YOU'VE GOT A TEENAGE BOY OR YOU WERE JUST UNFORTUNATEenough to be predisposed to odiferous, sweaty feet, you know that heat and moisture combine to create the perfect environment for a nasty yeast infection known as athlete's foot. This is really no different than thrush in horses. Thanks to wet conditions, thrush in the frog of a horse's hoof is caused predominantly by a single, but sometimes a combination of, anaerobic bacteria. Fusobacterium necrophorum is the given name for this bacterium and it is primarily responsible for thrush. It prefers the frog over other areas of the hoof. The infection is characterized by a foul odor and a blackish gray, oily discharge around the grooves on either side of the frog. The frog itself has a cheesy appearance and some mild deterioration.
