World agrochemical market slips back in 2005

Adverse weather conditions in some important markets resulted in a 3% drop in global agrochemical sales in real terms in 2005,according to preliminary estimates by UK consultants Phillips McDougall.The contraction of the market followed buoyant sales in 2004,which had seen the first real growth since 1998(Agrow No 464,p 16).However,in dollar terms,the continued weakening of the currency contributed to a 2.2% increase in agrochemical sales to 36,195 million at the distributor level,Phillips McDougall estimates.Crop protection sales rose by 1.9% to 31,310 million,while non-crop pesticide sales were up by 4.5% to 4,885 million.
