Application to the Evidence Base: Wife Caregiver Experiences in the Patient with Prostate Cancer at Home

The researchers have more than adequately stated a reason for the study to help caregivers, especially spouses, of patients with prostate cancer and their QOL as well as the patient's QOL. The background information focusing on information needs and the caregiver's QOL was well provided, supporting the large number of patients with prostate cancer being cared for in the home by primarily spouse caregivers. Although annotated in nature, the literature covers numerous variables related to spouse caregivers, burden, caregiver mental health, and depressive symptoms in addition to QOL in mixed-design studies. The study design of the current study is one of triangulation, which includes a nonexperimental, quantitative portion of the design and a collective case study design, one not seen frequently by this reviewer in qualitative research. Often, a triangulated study seeks to support qualitative and quantitative findings with each other (Polit & Beck, 2012). However, much difference exists about the definition of triangulation and how it is a mixed-method type of research (Mertens & Hesse-Biber, 2012).
