Seven emulsion explosives were prepd. by mixing NH4NO3 (granules diam. 1-2 mm) with fuel oils (7 types) in a mass ratio of 94:6 and then examd. by IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The presence of numerous cracks, micropores and mesopores on the crystal surface of NH4NO3 was obsd. They facilitated enlarging the contact surface between NH(4)NO(3)crystals and fuel oil. The contact surface increased also with increasing the oil viscosity.
