In 1993, the ACA Council formally ratified a proposal that the ACA Coating Inspection Certificates would need to be kept current, and would therefore only be valid for 5 years. This decision aligned the ACA with other international corrosion associations. In 1996, a letter was sent to all ACA coating inspectors, advising them that this requirement was to be introduced, and requesting their feedback. Based on this feedback, it was agreed that the upgrade method would be a one-day or home study course. A refresher course was finally completed in 1999, but in the meantime, the ACA was looking at introducing the NACE Coating Inspection courses.
