摘要

Concrete is a composite material which is hard and brittle shows some special characteristics by surprising the modern construction industry. In the earlier stage of the 17th century, concrete has become a revolutionary material and got success in the field of construction. In developing the alternatives to the concrete, a new replacement to coarse aggregate has been made. One such material was fly ash aggregate. Fly ash, also known as "pulverised fuel ash" is a coal combustion particulate composed of fine particles of fuel that are drawn out from the coal powered boilers together with the fuel gases. Fly ash is a good material for a wide range of applications viz. manufacture of cement, substitute of cement in concrete, manufacture of bricks, blocks, tiles, etc. The pozzolanic property coupled with lime reactivity makes it very suitable for binding and cementitious applications. It can be used as the replacement for coarse aggregate in concrete mixtures. It provides the concrete with appropriate strength and reduces the weight of the concrete and thus useful for making lightweight concrete.
