Jennifer Zulu is a farmer in Kalunga, a village about 30 km south of Chipata in Zambia's Eastern Province. At 33, she is mother of five children aged between 7 and 18 years. Zulu works a small piece of land-about 2 hectares loaned to her by her brother. 'I work it alone,'she says 'I grow maize, cotton and groundnuts. When the rains are good, yields are good and I don't have to buy maize. But in drought years, I have to buy maize. '
