Antibiotics are widely used in pig husbandry to both treat any sick individuals and to mitigate the herd health effects of common endemic bacterial diseases such as enzootic pneumonia (Mycoplasma), swine dysentery and pleuropneumonia.In terms of the antibiotic products used, the long-standing practice has been to carefully assess the safety profile of antibiotics and their likely use and impose withdrawal periods based on scientific assessments of the dropoff in levels in edible products from a pig, prior to sale.
