While driving under the influence of alcohol remains an issue in the United States, the number of convicted offenders has been decreasing over many years, not least because of concerted community efforts from groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, who have successfully increased public awareness of the dangers associated with alcohol and driving. The same cannot be said for drugged driving, which is increasingly problematic, in part because of less stringent laws surrounding cannabis use (it is now legal for recreational use in several states) and its social acceptability. A survey performed in 2013-2014 by the National Highway Traffic Safety A(irriinistration indicated that 20% of drivers who were voluntarily tested at the roadside had at least 1 drug present in their oral fluid or blood; 4.9% were medications; 15.1%, illegal drugs; and 12.6%, the psychoactive compound in marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol, and THC.
