US NRC calls for more rigorous GM crop evaluation

The US National Academy of Sciences' National Research Council (NRC) has called for a more rigorous review of the potential environmental effects of genetically modified crops before they are approved for commercial use. While the USDA has "substantially improve" its regulation of GM crops, the process should include greater public involvement and more monitoring after products are launched, the NRC says in a report issued in February.
