Evaluation of fungicide efficacy for the management of flyspeck and sooty blotch on 'Tenroy Gala' apples in NC, 2016

A trial was conducted at the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Mills River, NC to evaluate the effectiveness of fungicide programs for the management of flyspeck and sooty blotch on apple. The orchard site is a planting of19-yr-old 'Tenroy Gala' trees on M.7 rootstocks. Treatments were applied on approximately 7 to 21 day intervals dilute to runoff using a gas powered backpack sprayer (200 PSI) at the following timings: Pink (Pk, 5 Apr), bloom (Bl, 15 Apr), petal fall (PF, 28 Apr), 1st cover (1C, 10 May), 2nd cover (2C, 24 May), 3rd cover (3C, 7 Jun), 4th cover (4C, 28 Jun), 5th cover (5C, 19 Jul), 6th cover (6C, 9 Aug), 7th cover (7C, 17 Aug) and 8th cover (8C, 25 Aug). Prior to petal fall, applications of Syllit FL (1.5 pt/A) in tank mixture with Koverall (3 lb/A) were applied at green tip/half inch green and tight cluster growth stages. Total precipitation (inches) in Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul and Aug (up to date of harvest on 30 Aug) was 1.5, 1.8, 3.5, 2.2, 7.0, and 7.0 inches, respectively.
