More than two thirds of the original oil still remains in North Sea reservoirs and it's a similar story across the globe, both onshore and offshore. The average oil recovery rate is about 30-35%. Although there are great challenges to extraction using enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques, new developments could boost extraction significantly.
