In the week he formally accepted the Democratic party’s nomination to run for US president, Joe Biden has sought to cast his ambitious climate agenda as a job creation engine to broaden his appeal to voters amid a deep recession. “When I think of climate change, I think of jobs,” the former vice-president says. “When Donald Trump thinks of climate change, he can only muster one word: hoax.” Biden blames President Trump for mishandling the Covid-19 pandemic, which has led to the deepest US recession since the 1930s. But he believes that “in this crisis, we also have an enormous opportunity”, and has outlined a $2 trillion plan for building out clean energy and transportation infrastructure.
