Iran is pressing ahead with plans to expand oil output capacity in preparation for the eventual lifting of US sanctions, but serious questions remain over what the country and its predominantly state-run oil frms can achieve without foreign help. “We will stand strong,” oil minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh says. “Capacity is a strategic and vital issue for us, and we will absolutely go ahead with our plans to add capacity.” State-owned oil company NIOC this week signed two contracts, worth a combined $1.26bn, with state-owned contractor Petropars to complete the long-delayed frst phase development of the giant South Azadegan oil feld. Petropars has been tasked with more than doubling crude output from the feld to above 320,000 b/d by early 2023, from around 140,000 b/d last month.
