Venezuela on 12 June restructured state-owned PdV’s board of directors for the second time in five weeks, amid an escalating power struggle between factions loyal to President Nicolas Maduro, vice-president Tareck El Aissami and former national assembly president Diosdado Cabello. Maduro eliminated the post of PdV executive vice-president that was created in January 2017, named a new finance chief executive and increased the number of PdV board members from 13 to 14. Senior company and palace officials say the new board structure strengthens National Guard general Manuel Quevedo’s position as energy minister and PdV chief executive, expands the influence of Venezuelan army generals loyal to Cabello, and weakens El Aissami’s influence.
