US makes no progress in GCC -Qatar dispute

The US will continue to push for a negotiated end to the dispute between Qatar and its neighbours, despite secretary of state Rex Tillerson's first attempt at staging talks in Washington yielding no results. A list of demands that Saudi Arabia and the UAE presented to Qatar on 23 June will be difficult to meet, Tillerson says. Riyadh and its allies want Doha to shut down influential television network Al Jazeera and scale back co-operation with Iran, among other stipulations. The US administration has assigned itself the role of facilitator, but is reliant on Kuwait to mediate the dispute. The crisis began on 5 June, when Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE and Bahrain severed diplomatic and commercial ties with Qatar.
