Latin American reactions to Joe Biden’s US electoral victory presage a blurring of the ideological divide that the present government has fostered in the region. President Donald Trump’s administration sought to build a conservative coalition of Latin American countries disposed to investment from the US over China, and united around a Florida-friendly campaign to oust Venezuelan presi- dent Nicolas Maduro and further isolate Cuba. Colombia, Brazil and more recently the Dominican Republic were in. But Trump’s with-us-or-against-us stance on Caracas and Havana never sat well with many others, and politics was more complicated in countries such as Chile than the zero-sum US policy could accom- modate. Many were uncomfortable with Washington’s arm-twisting over China, which ignored the reality of Beijing’s regional investment, trade and lending in countries such as Ecuador and Brazil.
