The US oil sector could face tougher rules — but no outright ban on shale drilling — if former vice-president Joe Biden, whose grip on the Democratic nomination seems to be tightening, wins the race for the White House in November. Biden and his remaining Democratic primary opponent, Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, plan to draw a stark contrast on energy policy to President Donald Trump, whose push for “energy dominance” has meant easing environmental rules and trying to open up drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. But Biden only envisions reining in the sector, steering clear of Sanders’ hard-hitting policy proposals, such as banning hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and prosecuting fossil fuel company executives for wrongdoing related to climate change.
