Harvest Prescriptions 101:A PRIMER ON THE BASICS OF TIMBER HARVEST METHODS

Once upon a time, one went into Penn's Woods and cut trees... cut with axe and saw; cut with specific objectives (e.g. ship masts, housing, fuel, clearing for agriculture, charcoal for iron furnaces) but without much thought given to any future harvest; the woods seemed unlimited. Today, we know our forest is finite. We still cut for products... with a lot of technology involved, but we now keep an eye on the future of the forest. Indeed, we have a much better grasp of the intricacies of how a forest system functions and how we can operate within that natural framework to manage our pieces of Penn's Woods into the future. Our general objective has become a sustainable forest... and our harvesting has changed to reflect that.
