Poor quality diet in obstructive sleep apnea

We have read with interest the study published in the Journal by Reid et al. [1] in which they observed a lower dietary intake of whole grains, worse overall diet quality, and a higher intake of red/processed meat in persons with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). As discussed by the authors, these findings are important because there is accumulating evidence that poor quality diets are associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease and other chronic medical problems. Their results extend our previous observation from the Apnea Positive Pressure Long-term Efficacy Trial (APPLES) demonstrating that increasing severity of OSA is associated with higher consumption of protein [2]. Their results are evidence that the source of the protein is red/processed meat. In contrast, however, our study found that cholesterol, trans-fatty acid, and possibly saturated fatty acids and total fat also were consumed at higher levels in those with severe OSA, and that the effect was greater in women
