Physicochemical and Energy Characterization of Sugarcane Vinasse in Tucuman, Argentina

Vinasse is wastewater generated during the distillation of alcohol from the fermentation of juice or molasses of sugarcane. It has an acidic pH and contains a high level of organic matter, and, if not treated properly, can be a contaminant. The aim ofthis study was to analyse the main combustion characteristics of vinasse by means of physicochemical and energy characterization. The following tests were performed at different concentrations of 10,20,30,40,50 and 60 Bx: absolute density (IRAM-IAPG A 6616) and viscosity (ASTM D 1436-03), both in a temperature range of 30°C to 80°C. For dry vinasse, we tested: ash content, volatile solids and fixed carbon (ASTM D 5142-02); chlorine content (ASTM E 776-87); sulfur content (ASTM D3177-02); higher calorific value (ASTM D 2015-96); and ash fusibility (ASTM D 1857-03). The average results obtained on a dry basis were: 34.65% ash; 62.61% volatile solids; 2.74 % fixed carbon; 0.33% chlorine; 2.45% sulfur; higher calorific value 13,301kJ/kg (dry basis); andmelting point from 950°C to 959°C.The results at different concentrations, between 10 and 60 Bx were: 1.02 to 1.27g/cm3 of density and 0.93 to 227.85 cp of viscosity. This study can serve as the basis for the design of new vinasse transportation, combustion and boilers systems, that can be burnt vinasse alone or with a mixture of bagasse and cane harvest residue.
