Re-use of materials and a changing philosophy at Site Facilities Waste Management at Tata Steel IJmuiden

Tata Steel IJmuiden is an integrated steelworks that produces approximately 7.1 million tonnes of steel for a great diversity of customers. During the production reverts and by-products like mill oil, emulsions, iron and steel slags, iron and lime containing reverts, scrap, are produced as well. A total of approximately 3.7 million tonnes of reverts and wastes are produced annually. Of this amount, about 98 per cent is re-used in- or external. Unfortunately, about 50,000 tonnes of material is going to landfill. However, laws within Europe and therefore in the Netherlands, are getting tighter. Sustainable steel production is becoming more and more important to our customers. And above all, landfilling does cost money and reverts can be valorized. So a change in philosophy at IJmuiden is at hand to become world leader in re-use of reverts and by-products. The aim of the Waste management in IJmuiden is to grow to a zero waste site in the near future. Some major steps have to be made in the coming years. A plan is made how to reach that goal by implementing several phases. In this article, a first step is described how to come from the present situation to the preferred situation.
