摘要

This alarming book focuses on new forms of digital surveillance increasingly used by police forces in the United States (US) and elsewhere including Canada. Utilising data-matching technologies, police are, and increasingly will be, using these techniques alongside standard personal and face-to-face monitoring to increase and enhance their ability to predict and act upon suspicious acts and criminal behaviour. Big data is the result of the "growing ability to collect, store, sort and analyze digital clues about crime" (p. 2) through social media, video camera monitoring, corporate online purchasing and a whole host of ways in which human behaviour can now be observed and digitalised. The use of algorithms, machine learning, data mining and many other technologies actively being developed are means to increase the surveillance of human behaviour and surveillance capacity of police. This use of technology is especially dangerous in many cities in the US where "crime suppression targets communities of color" (p. 3).
