Commentary on 'gynecomastia: Etiologies, clinical presentations, diagnosis, and management'

In this issue of the Southern MedicalJournal, Ladizinski and colleagues present an insightful review of gynecomastia. Helpful information on etiologies, diagnosis, and management was reviewed, but one of the more surprising finds was the fact that gynecomastia is found in up to 57% of men. There are many etiologies responsible for gynecomastia and include chronic diseases; increases in estrogen or andro-gen resulting from obesity, puberty, and testicular tumors; diseases causing hypergonadotropic hypogonadism; and numerous medications, including anabolic steroids, antiandrogens, and over-the-counter herbal products.
