Tight supplies expected to constrain UK red meat shipments this year

Supplies of cattle and sheep are likely to remain tight in the UK this year, constraining efforts to profit from new opportunities on global export markets.Figures presented at this month's annual EBLEX Outlook conference in London revealed that UK's prime cattle kill in 2013 was potentially the lowest for 65 years.Debbie Butcher, senior analyst with AHDB/ EBLEX Market Intelligence, said UK beef production in 2013 had fallen by around 4% to 848 000 tonnes. With more meat directed to the domestic market in the wake of the horsemeat scandal, exports fell to an estimated 128 000 tonnes (carcasse weight) - down 12% on the previous year.
