Chinese interest in NZ farms back in the spotlight

The controversial sale of New Zealand farmland to Chinese companies is once again in the spotlight, ahead of the November general election. But is this anything more than political rhetoric in an election year when New Zealand firms such as dairy giant Fonterra are investing in farm ventures from Asia to South America? Following a recent business trip to China, ruling National Party finance minister Bill English claimed his government was under no political pressure from Beijing over the pending saleof 16 Crafar dairy farms to the Shanghai Pengxin International Group, whose application is currently awaiting approval from Wellingtons Overseas Investment Office (OIO).
