Few sentences are more unpleasant than "You are being sued." While we are not nearly as litigious as our neighbours in the United States, lawsuits for negligence begin every day in Canada. Even if they do not succeed, they create cost and headaches for the defendants. Releases can reduce the risk of a lawsuit. No doubt you have seen many. The releasor acknowledges a risk, and in exchange for being provided something, agrees to give up certain rights. Most often you surrender the right to sue. The other side is providing something, such as entertainment or a service, and in exchange, you are acknowledging there is a chance things will not end perfectly.
