WTO negotiations on stock rules for developing countries

WTO members are opening formal negotiations on easing price support disciplines for developing countries' public stocks and food aid schemes, as attempts continue to reach a partial Doha Round deal by the end of the year. The proposal, submitted by the 'G-33' led by Indonesia, would amend the WTO's Agreement on Agriculture to allow these countries to give more support to poorer farmers and also enhance food security. The group wants prices guaranteed to producers through public stock and food aid schemes to be categorised as 'Green Box' support - and therefore not be subject to any limits.
