Chronic type II diabetes mellitus leads to changes in neuropeptide Y (NPY) gene expression and distribution. One hundred type 2 diabetic male patients and 50 healthy controls were tested for serum liver enzymes, cholesterol, triglycerides, lipids, lowand high density LDL, and thyroid and kidney function tests with concurrent determination of multiple polymorphisms of the NPY gene at exon 2 +1128 (rs16139) by PCR-RFLP. We found increased (P <0.05) serum liver enzymes in all diabetic patients comparedwith controls except for aspartate transaminase. There were increased (P <0.05) urea, creatinine, uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides and low density lipoprotein (LDL), but decreased HDL. In diabetics we found increased TSH and decreased triiothyronine (T3) but no difference in T4 levels. At exon 2 +1128 (rs16139) the C allele was different in diabetic patients compared with the T allele which had higher frequency in controls. Our findings suggest that the phenotypic polymorphism of single nucleotideregion exon2 + 1128T/C (rs16139) may be associated with risk of type 2 diabetes and male susceptibility.
