An ethylene propylene diene(EPDM)rubber with an ultra-high molecular weight(UHMW)is desired in those applications where the EPDM rubber is highly filled with filler(s)and process oil in order to reduce the overall compound costs.In addition,such compounds are expected to exhibit improved processability,while providing superior physical and compression set properties at different temperatures.On the other hand,UHMW of EPDM is crucial for the complete phase-inversion of crosslinked EPDM in continuous polypropylene(PP)phase during the thermoplastic vulcanizate(TPV)production [1].Such UHMW EPDMs are generally extended with 75 phr to 100 phr oil for improved processability and superior manufacturing efficiency.Some of the application examples include TPVs,low hardness seals and gaskets,injection molded goods,automotive and construction rubber profiles,etc.In this paper,the use of the new UHMW Nordel 46550E in automotive,consumer,and infrastructure applications is described.Several case studies are presented highlighting the advantage of this UHMW EPDM in order to achieve better physical properties and compression set properties in low hardness compounds.Dow's sustainability commitment to the rubber industry is also briefly highlighted.
