Food security in Africa is still only an aspiration. With one-quarter of the world's arable land, Africa produces just 10% of its total global output. More than 265m people are still chronically hungry, yet Africa is estimated to hold 60% of the worlds remaining uncultivated farmland. Africa's agriculture, however, holds enormous potential for companies across the value chain. The barriers to raising production in Africa are well-known and complex, but if they could be overcome, the McKinsey GlobalInstitute (MGI) estimates that the continent's agricultural output could increase from 280 billion dollar (eur 220bn) a year today to S500bn (EUR 393bn) by 2020 and as much as $880bn (EUR 692bn) by 2030.
