Oil Spill Cleanup in Alaska Hampered by Weather

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) responded along with other agencies to an oil spill in Shuyak Strait near Shuyak Island, Alaska (USA) in late February 2018. On 26 February, hurricane force winds toppled an old abandoned building and dock that had once been used as a steamship depot, floatplane base, and cannery in a rem6te bay approximately 49 miles (79 kilometers) north of the city of Kodiak, Alaska. When the building and pier pilings collapsed into the water so did a rubber fuel bladder, allowing the release of 3,000 gallons (71 barrels) of bunker C fuel oil. The heavy oil flowed into the bay.
