While Australia has been cited as the chief rival for Canada's planned West Coast projects in the race to build liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity to supply Asia, the U.S. Gulf Coast is being increasingly viewed as a possible competitor as well. Are the two regions really competing for the same LNG customers? Possibly for the immediate future, but that's not likely to persist in the long term, according to Peter Hansen, the chief executive officer of a planned project on the west coast of the United States named Oregon LNG.
