In oncology, various types of radiation treatments are used to treat localized tumors. Because some forms of radiation have more energy than others, and thus penetrate more deeply, the type of radiation used depends on the desired depth of treatment. Radiation therapy uses electrons and photons, which have a quantifiable frequency. The more energy a photon has, the greater its frequency will be. The photon interacts with both healthy cells and cancer cells in the human body and cannot discern between the two; therefore, treatments can cause adverse effects including harm to healthy cells.
