A judge in Monterey County, California, has given a split decision in a case involving a 2016 voter-approved ban of hydraulic fracturing. Monterey County Superior Court Judge Thomas Wills' ruling leaves a ban on fracking in place, but allows the development of new oil, gas and wastewater injection wells. The ban is called Measure Z and was passed by county voters in 2016 and immediately challenged in court by Aera Energy. There are currently no fracking operations in Monterey County. A local green group, Protect Monterey County, said it plans to appeal the ruling.
