The US District Court of Maryland has blocked Columbia Gas Transmission – a division of TC Energy – from building a natural gas pipeline under the Western Maryland Rail Trail.

Columbia Gas had filed a lawsuit on May 17 after the Maryland Board of Public Works voted unanimously against granting the company an easement for a segment of the Panhandle Expansion Project to be drilled under the trail. Attorney General Brian Frosh filed a motion to dismiss the suit on Jun. 17 and said his office is "pleased that the court has agreed that a private pipeline company cannot force the State to accept a pipeline under the Western Maryland Rail Trail.”
