San Francisco-based Brightmark Energy has launched a biogas project in Yakima County, Washington, that will convert 150,000 gallons of manure from 7,000 cows into 160 million cubic feet of renewable natural gas per day.

The plan, known as the Augean project, is being developed by Brightmark Energy, Promus Energy and DeRuyter Dairies under the name Augean Renewable Natural Gas. RNG is methane captured from landfills, wastewater treatment plants and animal wastes that is cleaned and treated to meet natural gas pipeline quality standards and then used for either transportation markets or power generation. A key component of this project is the construction of pipeline infrastructure that can be used for RNG projects at other dairies in the area.
