Contribution of remote sensing to the study of the evolution of a shore line: application to the Cameroonian coast

The Cameroonian coast could be an important asset both for business and tourism. One can observe progressively demographical pressure on the coasts that should draw public attention to the need for a balance between the developments of cities away from that of the coast line. While it is imperative, to promote the development of activities and employments in both the sea and fluvial coast lines and in the banks of the great lakes, one must face the ecological challenge of regular erosion of rocky and sandy banks that constitutes a real risk for the population and the coast line. Although the coast is limited in size, it is particularly solicited by fishers, traders, industrials (oil) and professionals of tourism. It is therefore necessary to limit the risks to which these people, who are more and more attracted to the coasts, are exposed. Studying the historical behavior of' the coast and considering the world's preoccupation with global warming, we need to know whether there is a rise of sea level on the Cameroonian coast. A study of the coast over a period of time should reveal the dynamics of the coast, to determine if there is a movement that is uniform or random. If the movement is uniform, the velocity of coast displacement can be estimated.
