Pre-registration programmes have been criticised for failing to prepare students adequately to work with children and young people who have mental health problems. Children's and mental health nurses can be involved with these young people, but the issue is not covered well by programmes in either specialty. The Nursing and Midwifery Council's review of pre-registration education promotes shared learning opportunities. One option would be to enable students on different branches to learn from each other.
