Patent Ductus Arteriosus: What is New with an Old Disease?

Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) remains one of the most common cardiac congenital defects in dogs. Recently, treatment by non-surgical intervention ("coiling") has become popular, claiming decreased morbidity and mortality. However, these procedures require specialist facilities, equipment, and training; increased anesthesia time; and potentially increased costs. Even then, the procedures may incompletely close the PDA. Thus, surgical repair of PDA is still common.
