Neuropsychologically founded interdisciplinary milieutherapy in early neurological rehabilitation for severe memory or behavioral disorders

In early neurological rehabilitation, the treatment of mobile patients with amnesia and behavioral disturbances presents the interdisciplinary team with special challenges: due to disorientation, lack of awareness and psychomotor restlessness, disturbances of action, disinhibited (social) behavior, aggression and communication disorders, patients can endanger themselves or others. The rehabilitation of these patients requires a protective, therapeutic environment with a neuropsychologically founded interdisciplinary treatment concept.We present the principles of the milieutherapeutic concept of a protected ward in RehaNova Cologne. Data on the outcome from the years 2003-2013 show that after milieutherapeutic early rehabilitation 66 % of these initially severely affected patients were discharged home or to further inpatient rehabilitation, and only 18 % had to be transferred to a hospital care facility.
