A gas pipeline that would serve New York City and Long Island took another big hit amid a week of anti-fossil fuel protests whose organizers promise even more aggressive action going forward.The nationwide Climate Strike also sparked new frustrations by some in the energy industry who say greens activists are refusing to acknowledge that gas and oil companies agree that climate change is real and must be addressed quickly.In New York,the long-simmering fight against Williams’Northeast Supply Enhancement(NESE)project took a hit from Gov.Andrew Cuomo,who for the first time overtly rejected the project.”We have taken a position.We're against the pipeline,”he said at a public event.Cuomo has been under an intense public pressure campaign to come out against NESE,even though the utility it would serve has warned that supply shortages are inevitable without it(NGW Sep.2'19).A spokesman for one of the more aggressive green groups,350.org,told Energy Intelligence that the governor's words represented a larger victory in the move to end all fossil fuel use by 2050.”We now look forward to him denying the pipeline — and all other pipelines and gas infrastructure projects across the state — for good.”
