Even with the Tramp administration's efforts to prop up the coal industry, coal-fired power generation has become increasingly challenging thanks in large part to competition from relatively low-priced natural gas. That became apparent again this month when the Texas Municipal Power Agency (TMPA) told the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (Ercot) that it will only run its 470-megawatt Gibbons Creek coal plant located in Carlos, Texas, north of Houston from June through September.
