Drilling for Gas, Oil Reserves Off Atlantic Coast? Don't Count on It

The Trump administration started the new year by rolling out a draft proposal that would open 90% of the nation's Outer Continental Shelf to oil and gas production-news that was certain to roil the federal waters off reluctant state coasts and throw up familiar barricades between the industry and greens. But for a number of reasons, production off the US Atlantic Coast is unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future, if ever, despite some knee-jerk "drill-baby-drill" support. What besides the further dismantling of President Obama's green legacy is being accomplished? And it's just not Obama; administrations of both parties have nixed offshore Atlantic drilling for decades, even when exploitation might have made sense.
