摘要

Two subspecies of Magnolia sieboldii are described, compared and illustrated, the more frequent subsp. sieboldii and the very rare subsp. japonica. Their history and position in the genus are discussed.Magnolia sieboldii is an eastern Asiatic species of the genus Magnolia that contains about 300 species in the broad sense now commonly accepted. This species was first named as M. parv-iflora by Siebold and Zuccarini in 1845, based on a specimen that wasgiven by the Japanese botanist Keisuke I to (1803-1901) to Siebold when they met in 182V, but renamed M. sieboldii by K. Koch in 1853. Based on this species, a monotypic section Oyama was described by the Japanese botanist Nakai in 1933. Three years later Magnolia sect. Cophanthera Dandy (1936) was described, which includes M. globosa Hook. f. 8c Thorns, of the eastern Himalaya, M. wilsonii (Finet & Gagnep.) Rehder and M. sinensis (Rehder & E. H. Wilson) Stapf of western China as well as M. sieboldii.Although sect. Cophanthera is recognized as a synonym of sect. Oyama, Dandy's circumscription of the section is currendy used.
