In NBC's post-apocalyptic television series Revolution, broadcast from 2012 to 2014, interconnected sentient nanomachines, each the size of a virus, take over the world. But the show does not present us with the usual "grey goo" problem of nanotech dystopianism. Rather, the nanomachines in Revolution, referred to as "nanites", absorb electricity. Upon their creation, they disable all the electrical devices on the planet, resulting in a permanent global blackout. The voiceover on the opening credits explains: "We lived in an electric world. We relied on it for everything. And then the power went out. Everything stopped working. We weren't prepared."
