Healthcare associated infections pose a serious risk for patient safety especially in surgical care. In our study we systematically observed potentially antisepsis compromising incidents in the operation rooms of a Swiss University hospital. In 2016, a total of 18'535 surgical treatments were conducted in which we observed 483 (2.6%) patients with incidents such as unsterile objects, defected surgical gloves among others. These results were discussed in quality rounds with activities initiated to improve perioperative processes including future follow up of its outcomes. Furthermore, associations between antisepsis compromising incidents and post-operative infections will be studied in an upcoming inquiry.
