MDF is painted or coated using a PVC film in modern production, after the surfaces are formed with a CNC machine. The surface roughness of MDF used in this way is very important for the success of subsequent operations. In this study, the surfaces of MDF test samples with three different densities (582, 707, and 758 kg/m(3)) and three different moisture contents (6, 9, and 12%) were processed with CNC machines using three different cutting depths (1, 3, and 9 mm). The Ra, Rq, and Rz roughness values of the treated surfaces were determined according to ISO 468. Based on the data obtained, it has been determined that the surface roughness increased as the density of the MDF decreased, and the surface roughness increases with the moisture content and cutting depth. The lowest surface roughness was obtained at a 6% moisture content, 758 kg/m(3) density, and 1 mm depth of cut. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
